Seminar

“Rasta Talk - The Language of the Rastafari”

13.-14. December 2014

The seminar on Rasta Talk looked at a relatively new and developing language which was created, in Jamaica, by the cultural group popularly known as Rastfarians, who sought to establish a revolutionary language that would distinguish itself from the English language which Rastafarians view as inherently deceptive and a perpetuation of colonialism. Although essentially based on the phonology of Patwa, the unofficial language of Jamaica, and the mother tongue of most Jamaicans. Rasta Talk also differs from Patwa, by virtue of the Rastafarian ideology which has a direct bearing on the creation of the Rasta Talk lexicon.
